I bought a couple of Moscow Mule mugs a few years ago and rediscovered them in my cupboard recently. Since then I've been making them ALL the time! They're made with ice, vodka, ginger beer, and limes. That's it. There's just something about ginger beer that I love, but you have to get the right kind otherwise it's way too sweet. I'll give you a breakdown of the different brands of ginger beer (which is really the key ingredient) below.
There are many different variations to the Moscow Mule, and, in fact, are a great Mocktail option! The ginger beer non-alcoholic, despite its name, and there's no need to add alcohol at all if you're so inclined. I'll give you a full overview of how to make this fun summer drink!
How to make a Moscow Mule
The best way to make these is to start with the ice. This allows everything else to get cold around it. After this, add the vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice and lime. Insert the straw and you've got a delicious drink!
Storage
Since the ginger beer is carbonated, these drinks should be made to order. If you really want to keep some in the fridge, you can reuse a soda bottle to keep it fresh for up to 2 days.
Variations
These ingredients are just the base. You can add, change, or take away whatever you'd like and make it your own. Here are some other options:
- Gin
- Tequila
- Rum
- Bourbon
- Pomegranate seeds and juice
- Mint
- Basil
- Orange
- Cherries
- Raspberries
- Cranberries
Pairings
As the days get warmer, Moscow Mules are perfect for outdoor barbecues and basically anything cooked on the grill. I love sipping on one of these while sitting at a table outside, talking, and snacking with my family or friends. Moscow Mules are what I think of when the day is hot and I need something refreshing.
Which ginger beer to use in your Moscow Mule
Ginger beer is arguably the most important ingredient in your Mule. You can generally find different brands in your grocery store. It's non-alcoholic (mostly) and it comes in regular and diet, glass bottles and cans. I've found that they differ slightly in taste and (of course) I have an opinion on that.
Goslings is my favorite and is less sweet than the others. It's got a bit more heat from the ginger but isn't overly ginger-y.
