These easy mummy rice crispy treats for kids will inspire you to have fun with Halloween this year! Your kids will love these cute and spooky desserts.
Halloween is so much fun for kids. They get to dress up in fun costumes, go house to house for candy, and go to parties.
What they don't tell you before you have kids is how much fun the parents have too! I love watching my kids enjoy all the excitement of the holidays. When I can participate, it's even better.
These easy mummy rice crispy treats for Halloween are the perfect way to get them involved in the fun of the season. Have an interactive homeschool day or after school baking-together time.
I'm usually not someone who can make cute desserts like this (#Nailed It!) but they really are simple. And really, if your kids are helping out, they may not be perfect anyway.
This is kind of half the fun though, right? The kids love helping you in the kitchen and feel like they achieved something. So what if they aren't insta beautiful? Like my mom always says, "They still taste great!"
How to make mummy rice crispy treats for Halloween
Rice crispy treats are so easy to make and with a few adjustments to the recipe on the box, you'll have some extra tasty desserts. These mummy ones are especially fun!
- Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish and layer it with parchment paper.
- Melt the butter and marshmallows on the stove in a large pot over medium-low heat.
- Add in a bit of salt to balance the sweetness and some vanilla extract.
- Pour in the rice crispy cereal and stir just until it's all combined.
- Use a hard rubber spatula to transfer the gooey deliciousness to the baking dish and pat it down. Spray a little cooking oil on the spatula first if you're worried about it sticking.
- When they cool, lift them right out of the pan by the edges of the parchment paper and cut them into squares.
- Use the icing to spread a thin layer and let that dry.
- Using a spoon, drizzle icing over the top to create the "wrappings."
- Add the googly eyes.
- Ta-da! Spooky mummy rice crispy treats!
How to avoid hard and dry rice krispie treats
It's happened to me plenty of times. I make a big batch of awesome looking rice crispies and they turn out crunchy. Not a fan.
There are a few things you can do to make sure this doesn't happen to you.
- Use fresh ingredients: Make sure you buy a new box of Rice Krispies if yours has been sitting on the shelf for the last 3 months. The same goes for the marshmallows. If the bag has already been opened and the marshies are dry, buy a new bag.
- Use low heat: When melting the butter and marsh-balls use low heat. This means you need to be patient. Listen, I know how hard this is when you just want to eat those gooey rice krispie treats, but for the sake of soft mummies, it's important. When you use high heat, it hardens the sugar of the marshmallows and makes the batch crunchy.
- Don't pack them in: When you transfer the mixture to the baking pan, use your spatula to gently press down so they cool together. Don't pack them down or they'll be too dense and hard.
